TCA Chemical Peels

Prescribing clinician-led deeper resurfacing treatment for more significant skin texture concerns, pigmentation, visible signs of ageing and acne scarring.

What are TCA chemical peels?

TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels are medium-depth chemical peels that penetrate deeper into the skin than AHA peels. They work by removing damaged outer layers of skin and stimulating the production of new collagen and healthy skin cells from within.

TCA peels are more intensive than superficial peels and produce more dramatic results — but they also require more downtime and careful aftercare. This is why they must be performed under prescribing clinician oversight with a thorough pre-treatment assessment.

The result is significantly improved skin texture, reduced pigmentation, smoother scarring and a more even, youthful complexion.

What to expect

1

Pre-treatment assessment

A thorough skin assessment including skin type analysis, medical history review and discussion of realistic expectations. A pre-treatment skin preparation regime may be recommended.

2

Application

The TCA solution is applied to the skin in controlled layers. You will feel a stinging or burning sensation during application — this is normal and subsides quickly.

3

Frosting

The skin may develop a white ‘frost’ during the peel, which indicates the depth of penetration. This is carefully monitored by the clinician.

4

Peeling phase

Over the following 5–7 days, the treated skin will darken, tighten and peel. This is the natural exfoliation process revealing new, healthier skin beneath.

5

Recovery

Full recovery typically takes 7–10 days. Strict sun avoidance and a gentle skincare regime are essential during this period. The new skin will be pink initially, settling to your normal tone over the following weeks.

Important considerations

TCA peels require more downtime than superficial peels — plan for 7–10 days of visible peeling
Sun protection is critical before and after treatment to prevent complications
Not suitable for all skin types — a thorough assessment is essential
A pre-treatment preparation regime may be recommended to optimise results and reduce risk
Multiple sessions may be needed for deeper concerns, spaced 6–8 weeks apart
