Ingrown toenail surgery in Bedford
If you are searching for nail surgery in Bedford, you have likely been dealing with a painful, recurring, or infected ingrown toenail that conservative treatment has not resolved. Antibiotics and dressings can offer temporary relief, but when an ingrown toenail keeps coming back — or is causing significant pain, swelling, or discharge — surgery provides a reliable and lasting solution.
At Revive-Restore Skin & Joint Clinic in Bedford, we offer minor nail surgery for the permanent treatment of ingrown toenails and other nail conditions. All procedures are performed in a sterile clinical environment under local anaesthetic by a prescribing HCPC-registered podiatrist. You do not need a GP referral — you can book directly with us for an initial consultation.
Whether you need ingrown toenail removal, toenail surgery for a deformed or thickened nail, or are specifically looking for partial nail avulsion or total nail avulsion in Bedford, our experienced clinician will assess your nail and recommend the most appropriate surgical approach for your individual situation.
Most nail surgery procedures are completed in a single visit under local anaesthetic. We'll explain every step, keep you comfortable throughout, and provide comprehensive aftercare to support healing.
What is nail surgery?
Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure used to permanently treat painful nail conditions, most commonly ingrown toenails. It involves removing part or all of the affected toenail under local anaesthetic and applying a chemical agent called phenol to the nail matrix — the cells responsible for nail growth — to prevent the nail from regrowing in the same problematic way.
The word “surgery” can sound alarming, but this is a well-established, routine minor procedure carried out in a clinical setting. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward and comfortable the experience is. You remain awake throughout, feel no pain during the procedure itself, and are able to walk out of the clinic and return home the same day.
Nail surgery has a high success rate when performed correctly, and is widely considered the gold-standard treatment for recurring or severe ingrown toenails that have not responded to conservative management.
Partial nail avulsion vs. total nail avulsion
There are two main types of nail surgery offered at our Bedford clinic. Your podiatrist will recommend the most appropriate procedure following your initial consultation assessment.
Partial nail avulsion (PNA)
Partial nail avulsion is the most common form of ingrown toenail surgery. Only the affected nail edge — typically the border that has grown into the surrounding skin — is removed. The remainder of the nail is left intact, so the toe looks and functions normally once healed.
Following removal of the nail edge, phenolisation is applied to the nail matrix beneath that border to prevent regrowth. This destroys the cells responsible for producing the problematic nail edge, providing a permanent solution without affecting the rest of the nail.
Partial nail avulsion is suitable for most cases of ingrown toenail where only one or both sides are affected.
Total nail avulsion (TNA)
Total nail avulsion involves the complete removal of the entire toenail under local anaesthetic. This approach is recommended when the nail is severely damaged, deformed, thickened, or extensively infected in a way that cannot be resolved by removing only the nail edge.
As with partial avulsion, phenolisation is applied to the full nail matrix after removal to prevent the nail from regrowing. In some cases, a new nail will grow back over time if phenol is not applied — your clinician will advise you on the best approach based on your condition and goals.
Total nail avulsion is less common but is the right choice in specific clinical situations.
Who is nail surgery suitable for?
Nail surgery — whether partial or total nail avulsion — is typically recommended for patients experiencing:
Not sure if surgery is right for you? An initial consultation allows us to assess your nail, review your history, and advise on the most appropriate treatment — whether that is surgery or a conservative approach.
Nail surgery for children and teenagers in Bedford
Ingrown toenails are extremely common in teenagers and young people, and we are happy to see patients under the age of 18 for nail surgery at our Bedford clinic. A parent or guardian must attend the appointment and provide written consent before any procedure takes place. If you are booking on behalf of a young person, please mention this at the time of enquiry.
What to expect at your nail surgery appointment
From your first consultation through to recovery, here is how the process works at our Bedford clinic:
Initial consultation
Your first appointment is a thorough nail assessment. We review your symptoms, treatment history, and medical background to confirm suitability for surgery. We explain both partial and total nail avulsion in detail, answer your questions, and agree on the right surgical plan for your situation. No surprises on the day.
Preparation
On the day of surgery, the toe is cleaned and prepared in a sterile clinical environment. You will be asked about any changes to your health or medications since your consultation. Wear open-toed footwear or loose shoes to your appointment, as the dressing applied afterwards will be bulky.
Local anaesthetic
A local anaesthetic is injected at the base of the toe to numb the area completely. You will feel a brief sting as the anaesthetic is administered, but once it takes effect — usually within a few minutes — you will feel no pain whatsoever during the procedure itself.
The procedure
The affected nail edge or nail is carefully removed. Phenolisation is then applied to the nail matrix to prevent regrowth. The entire surgical procedure typically takes 15–20 minutes once the anaesthetic is working. The total appointment time, including preparation, anaesthetic, and aftercare, is around 45–60 minutes.
Dressing and aftercare advice
Your toe is dressed immediately after the procedure. Before you leave, you will receive full written aftercare instructions covering wound care, dressing changes, footwear, activity levels, and signs to watch for during recovery. You are able to walk out of the clinic and return home straightaway.
Recovery
Most patients can return to light daily activities within a day or two of surgery. Full healing of the nail and surrounding tissue typically takes 6–8 weeks. Follow-up appointments are available to monitor your progress and address any questions during recovery.
Conservative treatment & same-day options
Not every nail problem requires surgery. Depending on the severity of your condition, there may be a conservative option that provides effective same-day relief — without the need for a separate surgical appointment.
Conservative pathway
For mild to moderate ingrown nail edges, loose nail spicules, or early presentations, a conservative resection at the same appointment may be all that's needed. This can be performed without local anaesthetic, or with a local anaesthetic ring block for more painful or inflamed cases.
Best for: early presentations, mild to moderate cases, patients wanting immediate same-day relief.
Surgical pathway
For recurrent, severe, or structurally problematic ingrown toenails, nail surgery (partial or total nail avulsion with phenolisation) provides a permanent solution. This is booked as a separate procedure following your initial assessment.
Best for: recurring ingrown toenails, chronic nail conditions, long-term permanent resolution.
Important: Conservative resection removes the immediate painful nail spike but does not chemically destroy the nail root. For a permanent solution, nail surgery is recommended where clinically indicated. Your clinician will advise the right pathway at assessment.

Ingrown toenail removal recovery — what to expect
Recovery after ingrown toenail surgery is usually straightforward, though it does require some care and attention during the first few weeks. Here is what most patients experience:
Days 1–3
Some soreness and mild throbbing around the toe is normal once the local anaesthetic wears off. Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen is usually sufficient. Keep the dressing clean and dry.
Week 1–2
Daily or every-other-day dressing changes are required. The nail bed will appear red and may produce a small amount of clear or slightly yellow discharge — this is a normal part of healing. Avoid tight footwear.
Weeks 3–6
The nail bed gradually heals from the outside edges inward. Discomfort reduces significantly. Most patients return to normal footwear and activities during this period, though open-toed or wide shoes remain preferable.
Weeks 6–8+
Full healing is typically complete by 6–8 weeks. The skin over the nail bed hardens and normalises. If phenolisation was applied, the treated nail edge or matrix will not regrow.
Full written aftercare instructions are provided at your appointment. If you have concerns during recovery, contact the clinic directly.
After your surgery — follow-up appointments
The £400 Nail Surgery Package includes the procedure and one scheduled postoperative redressing appointment. After that first follow-up you will normally be given self-care advice for managing your dressing at home. If a further face-to-face appointment is needed, the following fees apply — whether that appointment is requested for additional reassurance or is clinically indicated.

£95
In exceptional circumstances only. We do not provide a routine out-of-hours service — most urgent concerns will be accommodated within published clinic hours. Payable when arranged, regardless of outcome.
Sport & physical activity: Returning to sport or strenuous activity before advised can cause wound trauma, bleeding, or hypergranulation tissue. Any additional appointment needed as a result of premature return to activity is not included in the package — the appropriate £40, £60, or £95 fee applies.
New or unrelated nail problems: Follow-up fees apply to the specific surgical site. A new problem, different toe, or unrelated nail condition requires a separate assessment at the appropriate fee.
Urgent medical care: Clinic communications are not monitored outside business hours. If you need medical attention that cannot wait until we reopen, please access the appropriate NHS urgent or emergency service — our out-of-hours appointment is not a substitute for NHS emergency care.

Frequently asked questions about nail surgery in Bedford
Can children and teenagers have nail surgery in Bedford?
Yes. We treat patients under the age of 18 for nail surgery at our Bedford clinic. Ingrown toenails are very common in young people and teenagers, and surgical treatment is often the most effective long-term solution. A parent or guardian must attend the appointment and provide written consent before any procedure takes place. Please mention at the time of booking that the patient is under 18.
Do I need a GP referral for nail surgery in Bedford?
No. As a prescribing HCPC-registered podiatrist, we are able to assess and treat nail conditions independently. You do not need a GP referral or letter. Simply book an initial consultation directly with us and we will assess your nail and advise on the appropriate surgical plan.
Does ingrown toenail removal hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you will feel no pain during the surgery itself. Most patients describe the anaesthetic injection as a brief sharp sting, after which the toe becomes completely numb. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, you will feel pressure and movement but no pain.
What is the difference between partial nail avulsion and total nail avulsion?
Partial nail avulsion removes only the problematic nail edge — the section that is ingrown or causing pain — while leaving the rest of the nail intact. Total nail avulsion removes the entire toenail. The right procedure depends on the nature and severity of your condition, which is assessed at consultation.
How long does toenail surgery take?
The surgical element of the procedure takes around 15–20 minutes once the anaesthetic is in place. Including preparation, administration of the anaesthetic, and post-procedure dressing and aftercare advice, you should allow approximately 45–60 minutes for your appointment.
Will my ingrown toenail grow back after surgery?
Phenolisation — the chemical treatment applied to the nail matrix after avulsion — has a high success rate in permanently preventing regrowth of the treated nail edge. When the procedure is performed correctly, recurrence rates are low. Your clinician will discuss the expected outcomes and success rates at your consultation.
How much does nail surgery cost in Bedford?
A podiatry consultation costs £60 (30 minutes), the same fee for every condition. Same-day conservative nail resection can be combined with your consultation for £100 in total (without local anaesthetic); if local anaesthetic is required, an additional £45 anaesthetic charge applies, making £145 in total. Nail surgery as a definitive procedure starts from £400 and is booked as a separate appointment. Final pricing is confirmed at your assessment.
What happens at the podiatry consultation?
The consultation is a 30-minute comprehensive diagnostic appointment. Your clinician will examine your nail condition and carry out vascular and neurological checks. You will receive a full treatment plan, prescription management if an infection is present, and clear advice on the most appropriate pathway — including whether a same-day conservative treatment option is suitable.
Can I get same-day treatment at my assessment appointment?
Yes, in appropriate cases. An urgent conservative resection without local anaesthetic (consultation and resection combined: £100) is suitable for mild to moderate ingrown nail edges or loose nail spicules. A prescriber-led urgent resection with a local anaesthetic ring block (if local anaesthetic is required, an additional £45 anaesthetic charge applies, £145 in total) is available for more painful or inflamed presentations. Both options remove the immediate painful spike but do not destroy the nail root — if a permanent solution is needed, nail surgery is recommended.
What is the difference between conservative resection and nail surgery?
Conservative resection removes the immediate painful nail spike or ingrown edge and provides fast same-day relief — but it is not a permanent solution. The nail will grow back, and may grow in the same problematic direction. It is a treatment for immediate pain relief only, and some patients will go on to require a full partial nail avulsion (PNA) in the future. Nail surgery (partial nail avulsion with phenolisation) permanently prevents nail regrowth on the treated border and is the definitive treatment for recurrent or severe ingrown toenails.
How soon can I go back to work after nail surgery?
Most patients can return to sedentary or light-activity work within one to two days of surgery. If your work involves being on your feet for extended periods or wearing tight footwear, you may wish to allow a few extra days before returning. Your clinician will advise based on your specific situation and type of work.
Can I walk after ingrown toenail surgery?
Yes. You are able to walk immediately after the procedure and will leave the clinic on foot. Wear comfortable, open-toed or wide footwear to your appointment. Avoid prolonged standing or walking on the day of surgery, but normal gentle walking is fine from the outset.
Are follow-up appointments after nail surgery included in the price?
The £400 Nail Surgery Package includes the procedure and one scheduled postoperative redressing appointment. Any further face-to-face appointments beyond that are charged separately. A standard follow-up wound review or dressing change is £40 (15 minutes). If additional clinical treatment or prescribing is required the fee is £60 (up to 30 minutes). In exceptional circumstances, an out-of-hours appointment may be arranged at £95. Full details are on our Booking & Clinical Policy page.
